Women burn body fat just as easy

Due to their lower level of muscle mass, anabolic hormones and high percentage of body fat, it’s always been assumed that women have a tougher time shedding body fat than men. However, when it comes to burning calories, muscle appears not to have ****-specific properties.

The results of a recent study show that in response to intense physical activity and calorie restriction, men and women expend the same amount of calories when corrected for differences in lean body mass.

This study was rather unique in that it assessed total energy expenditure (TEE) in a group of athletic men and women (marines) in an outdoor environment as they completed field training during calorie restriction.

For both men and women, TEE were among the highest observed for a military field training exercise. TEE, when normalized or corrected to body mass and fat-free mass were the same for men and women.

Men generally have a larger amount of muscle mass, that’s why they shed fat easier. Therefore, women should strive to build their muscle mass so they burn more calories during the day. On a calorie-restricted diet, this will make fat loss easier. To learn about the most effective way to train to build muscle mass, click here.

Are they’re differences between men and women regarding their ability to shed body fat?

Men do lose unwanted weight faster than women. One physiological reason is that men release more stress hormones such as norepinephine, in response to exercise.

Hormones such as norepinephine stimulate lipolysis, which is the breakdown of fat in cells. This occurs via enzymes called lipases that enable the release of fat from cells. Studies have shown that the amount of lipase that people have in their cells can determine their capacity to metabolize and shed body fat. And you guessed it, men generally have much higher levels of lipases.

However, ladies should not despair. Studies have shown that supplementation with the green tea extract EGCG and yohimbine enhance lipolysis, particularly in women
