Sunscreen - Summer and Winter

Cyclists are warned to cover-up when training outdoors, even in winter. Research from Queensland, Australia has shown that cyclists still get sun burnt when training outdoors in the winter months. This places these athletes at a high risk for developing skin cancer.

The innovative researchers from Queensland University’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) attached UV dosimeters to the head, backs of hands and ankles of 22 cyclists who took part in a seven-day charity bike ride.

Results showed that on average, their daily sun exposure exceeded, and in one case almost doubled, one minimal erythemal dose (MED) which is the amount of light needed to cause sunburn. The highest exposures were recorded on the top of the head (1.80 MED), followed by the backs of the hands (1.28 MED), the side of the head (1.14 MED) and the ankle (0.94 MED). These measures are enough to cause skin damage, and they were taken during winter.

Cyclists don't usually like to use sunscreen because the lotion can make their hands greasy and slippery on the handlebars. However, these results clearly show that cyclists need to take precautions against sunburn, even in the cooler months. Those of you coming out of a North American winter need to take precautions now as you head in to the warmer months. The use of alcohol-based sunscreens as well as washing hands thoroughly would be a solution.

We have to take good care of our skin because it is the largest organ of our body. Use moisturising for your skin in winter. Use sunscreen for protecting your face from sun rays. Because it harm to skin. Because o sun rays in summer our skin gets burn and it becomes black and dead.

It is just as important to yield affliction of your derma in the winter and accumulate it moisturized as it is to assure your derma from the sun during the bounce and summer if you are alfresco for continued periods of time.
