Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men in the United States. Two out of three males will develop symptoms if they live long enough.

Pectin is the chemical structure that forms the cell walls of fruits and vegetables and is considered a natural plant fiber.

Researchers at the University of Georgia have discovered that pectin also kills prostate cancer cells.

Although these cancer cells were grown in cell culture (a lab dish), the pectin was able to destroy a whopping 40% of these malignant cells. Pectin even killed cells that were resistant to hormone therapy. More good news is that pectin had no affect on healthy cells.

Pectin appears to be a highly reactive compound to carcinogenic cells. Pectin kills these cells by inducing a process called apoptosis – a process that induces cell suicide.

The scientists concluded that these findings add to the evidence that suggests a high intake of fruits and vegetables offers a real protective effect against diseases such as cancer.
