Cardio makes you Smarter

A review of studies on exercise and its effect on brain functioning in human and animal populations has concluded that physical exercise slows ageing's effects on the brain. Furthermore, regular training (striving to increase your level of fitness) may also improve mental processes that enhance intellect.

That’s right, training may make you smarter!

These findings will be presented at the 114th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association (APA). This review of the last 40 years of research offers clear evidence that physical exercise can have a positive influence on cognitive and brain functions in older animal and human subjects. Additionally, different methodologies were examined to comprehensively study what effects exercise can have.

Firstly, the researchers review found a significant relationship between physical activity and decreased occurrence of dementia in later life. Secondly, a relationship was found between fitness training and improved cognition, more efficient brain function and retained brain volume in older people.

It all comes down to blood flow. Vigorous exercise increases and sustains levels of cerebral blood flow that results in superior brain performance in a number of measures

Cardios benefits beyond the body, mental health too
Exercise has benefits beyond the physical. When thinking of the benefits of exercise, we often think only of the physical and physiological benefits such as increased muscle mass, strength and decreased body fat. However, it’s just as important to recognize many psychological benefits from engaging in regular exercise.

Exercise is shown to reduce stress and anxiety. In fact, regular exercise is shown to be an effective strategy that can manage anxiety over the long term long-term.

Think about how you feel after exercise? Exercise is shown to promote a relaxed but positive mood state. Compared to non-exercisers, people that exercise are shown to have a more optimistic outlook on life. Exercise is linked to a reduction in depression and even used in therapy to help individuals with clinical depression.

While the physical benefits of exercise are what attract most of us to the gym, never underestimate the powerful benefits that regular exercise has on your psychological health as well.

According to recent review by scientists from the Netherlands, aerobic exercise not only improves cardiovascular fitness it boosts brain power.

Around age 50, even healthy older adults begin to experience mild declines in cognition, such as occasional memory lapses and reduced ability to pay attention. Convincing evidence shows that regular aerobic exercise boosts cognitive processing speed, motor function and visual and auditory attention.

How does exercise affect brain function? Improvements in cognition with aerobic exercise are explained by improvements in cerebral blood flow, leading to increased brain metabolism which, in turn, stimulates the production of neurotransmitters and formation of new synapses.

A boost in brain function and health is just another great reason to make sure you crank out those Max-OT Cardio sessions, every week!
